Retrocyclin peptides are small antimicrobial agents with potent activity against bacteria and viruses. The peptides are nonhemolytic, and exhibit minimal in vitro cytotoxicity. A pharmaceutical composition comprising retrocyclin as an active agent is administered therapeutically to a patient suffering from a bacterial and/or viral infection, or to an individual facing exposure to a bacterial and/or viral infection, especially one caused by the HIV-1 retrovirus or other sexually-transmitted pathogens.

L'invention concerne des peptides de rétrocycline qui sont de petits agents antimicrobiens faisant preuve d'une puissante activité contre les bactéries et les virus. Ces peptides sont non hémolythiques et présentent une cytotoxicité minimale in vitro. Une composition pharmaceutique renfermant une rétrocycline comme principe actif est administrée comme traitement à un patient souffrant d'une infection bactérienne et/ou virale ou à un individu exposé à une infection bactérienne et/ou virale, notamment celles causées par le rétrovirus VIH-1 ou d'autres pathogènes sexuellement transmissibles.
