Conventional aluminum smelting cells (1) are retrofitted with inert anode assemblies (12) which replace the consumable carbon anodes (2) of the cell (1). The inert anode assemblies (12) may include multiple inert anodes, and may also include insulation (18) for reducing heat loss during operation of the retrofit cells (10).
