The present invention relates to the use of a retroviral vector for delivering a gene encoding a cellular gap junction protein to a cell. There is provided a retroviral vector comprising an insertion site for inserting a nucleotide sequence encoding a gap junction protein, and a promoter region operably linked to the nucleotide sequence, for restoring expression of a gene encoding the gap junction protein in said cell when inserted in the cell. The cell may be transduced with packaging cells line generating retroviral vectors containing the nucleotide sequence. The retroviral delivery cassette inserted in the retroviral vector allows for in vitro and in vivo expression of genes having therapeutic uses in treating diseases such as cancer. Examples of genes include those encoding the Cx43, Cx26, Cx32 and E-cadherin proteins.
