The present invention relates to a new class of retrovirus, named HIV-2, which samples were deposited with the ECACC under n° 87.01.1001 and 87.01.1002 and with the NCIB under n° 12.398 and 12.399. This invention also relates to antigens obtained from this virus, particularly to proteins p12, p16, p26 and gp140. These antigens are used for the in vitro diagnosis in man of potentiality for certain forms of AIDS, by being placed in contact with the serum of the man being diagnosed. The invention also relates to immunogenic compositions containing more particularly glycoprotein gp140. This invention relates to the application of cloned DNA sequences, derived from the RNA of HIV-2, as probes in diagnostic kits.
