A novel automated handle assembly has an opening that allows for insertion of a needle set (42). Ile needle set (42) is an integral unit that consists of an outer hollow cannula (48), and an inner pointed tip stylet (46). The stylet (46), and the cannula (42) are capable of being urged forward separately into the biopsy area in a defined motion in relation to each other. The handle assembly (40) includes a housing (52), a cannula extension (56), and a stylet extension (82).
