The coating is applied to a first roller (40) and coating thickness (162) is limited by a knife blade (170). The coating travels to a point of contact (70) with the second roller (42) about which the webbing is wound, and the coating is thereby transferred to the webbing (12). By controlling the relative speed between the two rollers, the knife blade (170) can be raised or lowered with respect to the roller (40) to attain greater control over the coating operation.
