The present invention involves the discovery that an organoclay made by the reaction of smectite clay and a quaternary ammonium compound (quat) can be mixed with fibrous material such as wastepaper pulp to form a unique rheological additive for organic fluid systems. Such a rheological additive has broad uses, is cost effective, and is particularly useful as a rheological additive for asphalt and organic paints and coatings. In an important aspect the invention is a rheological additive providing inexpensive, effective and efficient rheological properties when used at low levels in organic systems. In one specific aspect, the invention provides a rheological additive comprising: a) one or more organoclays made by the reaction of smectite clay and one or more organic quaternary ammonium chloride compounds at a percent organic of for about 80% to about 140% of the cation exchange capacity of the smectite clay and b) one or more fibrous materials such as newsprint or waste paper pulp. The invention also includes a method of preparing the inventive rheological additive and organic fluid systems containing the improved rheological additive including systems such as asphalt, pitch, creosote, paints and coatings, oil well drilling fluids, polyesters, epoxies, adhesives, cosmetics and inks.
