A form of calcium carbonate having a blocky-six-sided rhombohedral final crystal morphology, with a surface area of from about 3 to about 15 m2/g, an average discrete particle size of from about 0.2 to about 0.9 microns, wherein the discrete particles have an aspect ratio less than 2, and a particle size distribution such that at least about 60 weight percent of the particle lies within 50 percent of the equivalent discrete particle sherical diameter, suitable for use as a filler material in papermaking to improve the optical properties of the resulting paper, is disclosed. An accelerated heat-aging process, including embodiment thereof which utilize hydrothermal techniques, for rapidly producing this form of calcium carbonate and a related form of calcium carbonate having a prismatic final crystal morphology in large quantities to meet the demand of the papermaking industry, as well as a method for using these materials in papermaking are also disclosed.
L'invention est constituée par une forme de carbonate de calcium utilisée comme matériau de remplissage dans la fabrication du papier pour améliorer les propriétés optiques du papier. Ce matériau a une structure cristalline rhomboédrique à six faces, avec une aire allant de 3 à 15 m2/g environ, une taille de particule moyenne allant de 0,2 à 0,9 micromètre environ, ces particules ayant un rapport d'aspect inférieur à 2, et une distribution de tailles de particules telle qu'au moins 60 % des particules occupent moins de 50 % de l'espace occupé par un ensemble de particules sphériques de même poids. Sont également divulgués un procédé de vieillissement accéléré à la chaleur, avec concrétisation connexe utilisant des méthodes hydrothermiques, ce procédé servant à produire, rapidement et en quantités suffisantes pour répondre à la demande de l'industrie de la fabrication du papier, cette forme de carbonate de calcium et une forme connexe à structure cristalline prismatique, et une méthode d'utilisation de ces matériaux dans la fabrication du papier.
