A thermally responsive expansion valve having an inlet and outlet disposed at right angles in a body having a valving passage communicating between the inlet and outlet with a valve seat and a valve obturator moveable with respect to the valve seat for controlling flow through the valving passage. A fluid filled capsule attached to the valve body has a diaphragm moveable in response to changes in pressure in the fluid capsule which is intended for connection to a remote fluid filled sensing bulb through a capillary tube. A one piece operating member has a pad contacting the diaphragm and three integrally formed legs each slidably received in a bore in the body. A capped spring biases the obturator against the valve seat and upon movement of the diaphragm and pad, the legs are operable to act against the cap and overcome the spring bias to permit the obturator to move away from the valve seat. A spring retainer is pre-positioned in the inlet to provide a predetermined bias of the spring and thus calibration after assembly is eliminated.
