A ring laser is formed of a light emitting laser source, such as a semiconducting laser chip, and an external cavity which is an optical waveguide such as an optical fiber having a core and a cladding. The optical waveguide has a reflector which reflects light coupled from the laser source back to the laser source, so as to form a ring cavity within the waveguide. The reflector may be a Bragg grating or a mirror. Two counterpropagating paths may be superimposed with light propagating in opposite directions and in this manner form a gyroscope. The ring laser may also be combined with a doped fiber to act as a pump for such fiber.
