ABSTRACT Start up apparatus for starting the laser beams in a laser angular rate sensor with improved reliability and in a reduced amount of time. A gas discharge device having wall portions containing the gas and a cathode and two anodes in direct contact with the gas. Electrically conductive material extending along the outside of the wall from the cathode at least to one of the anodes. The electrically conductive material is selectively connectable by way of a switch, to the power source for the gas discharge device. The conductive material when connected to the power source establishes a second distributed electric field to assist in start up of the gas discharge device.
