RING PURGING METHOD Abstract of the Disclosure A method and apparatus is described for initializing non-synchronous peer-to-peer data communication rings, and for effecting error recovery in such networks In non-synchronous ring networks the stations derive reception clocking synchronism from data signals sent by preceding stations and independently derive transmission clocking synchronism from a local source of oscillations which is not synchronized to the received signals. During normal operation, each station monitors its reception clocking condition, and upon detecting a loss of synchronism conducts a recovery operation designed to restore data integrity to all stations. This operation involves the station timing out for a first predetermined time interval, and then re-sampling its receiving clock to determine if the loss condition is "transient" or "persistent". If the condition is transient the station operates in a purging configuration for a second predetermined interval of time and then resumes normal operation. The purging operation removes erroneous data signals from the ring. If a loss condition is persistent the station operates first in a "bypass" configuration then in the purging configuration and then resumes normal operation. This serves to restore reception clocking in temporary alignment with the local transmission clock source. If the station fails to develop synchronism it repeats the foregoing recovery procedure.
