In a ringing choke converter, a series circuit of a capacitor means and a diode means is disposed between a base and an emitter of a switching transistor means, and a constant-voltage diode means is linked in parallel with the capacitor means. In consequence, a voltage applied to the capacitor means does not exceed a voltage value of the constant-voltage diode means. In particular, a collector surge current flowing through the switching transistor means is restricted by the voltage value of the constant-voltage diode means. Consequently, even if the switching transistor means abruptly changes its operation when the converter is switching on or off, it is possible to prevent an excessive surge current from flowing through the transistor means.
