Casting molds used in producing cast metal products have riser cavities and have waste metal risers and waste riser topping material with the riser cavities. The invention discloses a riser knock-out and riser topping gathering apparatus and system. The apparatus has plungers to enter the riser cavities in a portion of a metal casting mold. The plungers have ends to push the waste metal risers out of the cavities. The ends may be nose-pieces connected through spaced ribs to a hollow inner conduit. Each plunger may also have a wire brush assembly for removing baked sand from the wall of the riser cavity. The wire brush assembly has an inner diameter that is spaced from the outer wall surface of the conduit. A duct system, vacuum mechanism and collecting system are also provided. The conduits of the plungers are connected to the duct system, and there are air flow paths so that air may be drawn by the vacuum mechanism down through the riser cavity and then up through each conduit to the duct system and through the duct system to the collecting system. The moving air can draw the riser topping materials with it up into the interior of the conduits and through duct work to be separated at the collecting system.
