A process for forming a rivet from a sheet of metal, typically double reduced steel, comprises a first operation to produce a blister (25) surrounded by an annular corrugation (39). A second stage forms this blister into a boss by flattening the corrugation between a die (35) and a support (30) so as to push metal back towards the centre of the blister. Finally, the boss is converted into an upstanding hollow rivet in conventional manner.

Processus utilisé pour façonner un rivet à partir d'une feuille de métal, habituellement un acier à double réduction. La première étape du procédé consiste à produire une boursoufflure (25) entourée d'une cannelure annulaire (39). La deuxième étape vise alors à tranformer la boursoufflure en protubérance en aplatissant la cannelure entre une matrice (35) et un support (30) de façon à ramener le métal vers le centre de la boursoufflure. Enfin, la protubérance est transformée en un rivet creux et droit par méthode conventionnelle.
