ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A road roller includes a ballast means comprising a chamber of gasproof material, the chamber having one side open and being provided with an end wall connected to a chassis of the road roller. The chamber communicates with a vacuum source and is arranged so that, when vacuum is induced in the chamber, the pavement being compacted overlaps said open side of the chamber with the result that forces are transmitted from the chamber to the chassis of the road roller. In one embodiment of the invention a plurality of chambers with carriages are mounted in an endless guide which is rigidly connected to the chassis. Vacuum is induced during movement of the road roller in those chambers which are in contact with the pavement with the result that these chambers are sucked to the pavement surface. Simultaneously carriages of all the chambers slide along the movable guide.
