A road shoulder compacting apparatus has a rotatable ground engagement member for rolling compacting engagement with the ground, the ground engagement member having an axle, and a support structure for supporting the ground engagement member on a vehicle. A parallel motion linkage is provided for raising and lowering the support structure relative to the vehicle. A first pivotal connection between one end of the support arm and the support structure allows pivotation of the support arm about a first axis of pivotation through anangle of 180° between end positions in which the support arm extends transversely of the apparatus and a second pivotal connection between the opposite end of thesupport arm and the axle has a second axis of pivotation. A hydraulic actuator pivots the ground engagement member about the second axis of pivotation relative to the support arm and thereby variably tilting the ground engagement member. The support arm has a length sufficient to locate the ground engagement member at a lateral spacing from the support structure, on pivotation of the support arm into its end positions, for compacting a road shoulder.
