ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a roll which has a crossbeam supporting a hollow cylindrical roll by means of bearings and in which the roll is urged towards the nip by hydraulic pressure in a chamber defined by seals between the crossbeam and the shell, a force exerting means is located axially outside the bearing to apply a further force to the shell so that the pressure applied along the line of the nip may be substantially uniform.
