ABSTRACT IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO A ROLL A roll has a central axial support beam 1 and a surrounding hollow roller shell 2. Pressure elements 5 are mounted in recesses 3 in the bottom of beam 1. Each pressure element 5 comprises a hollow housing 6 closed by a plate 8 having holes 16 that accommodate pistons 17 that apply pressure to a shoe 18 in contact with the roller when pressure fluid is supplied by cord units 12, 14 to the interior of housing 6.
