A hydrostatic pressure chamber or space is located between the stationary roll support and the rotatable roll shell. Substantially punch or piston-like pressure or support elements are provided for the roll, these pressure or support elements being located essentially in the plane of symmetry of the pressure chamber at the side of the stationary roll support which faces away from the pressure chamber.
