In this roll, which is intended in particular for the comminu- tion of brittle materials for grinding in a material bed roll mill, a profiled cladding for protection against wear is constructed according to the invention on the outer face of a circumferential casing region by machining profile grooves into the material of the circumferential casing region for particles of material to be firmly pressed in and only apply- ing hard material strips by build-up welding onto the profile projections delimiting the profile grooves. This roll made up according to the invention causes a relatively low consumption of hard material with durable protection against wear of its surface and a reliable capacity for drawing in material.
