The invention concerns a roll-up thermal insulator (100; 200) in the form of a planar structure which, when unrolled, forms a multi-chamber sys- tem for providing air-filled, preferably circulation-free subdivisions whose vo-lume decreases again when the insulator is rolled up. The aim is to develop the insulator so as to obtain even better thermal insulation values, increase the transparency and provide additional light-controlling effects, while retaining its compactness when rolled up. To this end, the planar structure is designed as an insulating mat (112) which has at least two films disposed one behind the other (121 to 127) whose distance apart can be controlled by spacer rods (142 to 147) offset by a vertical distance (AV) and articulated to adjacent films.
