A roll, especially for press rolls in paper machines includes an elastomeric shell separated from a roll core. The roll is characterized by the fact that, in the region of the axial end of the roll core, there is a large reduction in thickness of the roll shell, with the reduced thickness provided substantially at the axial end of the roll shell or in an annular transition region spaced from and near the end of the shell. An advantage of the present invention is that it provides an improved method for securing the roll shell wherein minimal or no proturbances occur beyond the radially outer circumference of the roll shell.
