A roller (100) for compressing of webs of material (30) comprises a rotating hollow roller (1) traversed lengthwise by a stationary crosshead (3). Hydraulic loading devices in the form of sealing members (14) act on the inside circumference (4) of the hollow roller (1) and delimit hydrostatic bearing pockets to which hydraulic pressure fluid can be supplied. The extension of the sealing members (14) is limited by head bolts (42), which makes it possible to position the hollow roller (1) relative to the crosshead (3) during operation.
