Disclosed is a triplan constant velocity universal joint which, in a preferred embodiment, has an annular outer member, an inner member, three pairs of shoes and a three sets of four elongated rollers. The interior cavity of the outer member has three longitudinal lobes forming opposing pairs of parallel longitudinal guideways which mate with the elongated rollers. The inner member is centrally positioned within the outer member and has three trunnions, each extending radially into a respective one of the three longitudinal lobes. Each trunnion has an associated pair of shoes. Both the trunnion and its shoes have mating truncated spherical surfaces which permit the shoes to pivot relative to the trunnion. The elongated rollers are retained within longitudinal race-ways provided along the surface of each shoe opposite its spherical surface. The elongated rollers engage an adjacent longitudinal guideway on either side of its trunnion. The elongated rollers have barrel-shaped contours which mate with the contour of the bearing surfaces and with the contour of their adjacent guideways so as to provide line contact between the elongated rollers, the longitudinal bearing surface and the adjacent guideways.
