The stability of rolling metal sheets on a tandem mill is improved: first by reducing the influence of a disturbance in one stand on the rolling process in the adjacent stands, and second by increasing the stability within the stand. Tension fluctuations caused by a given disturbance are in inverse proportion to the length of the strip involved. Increasing the length of strip by locating the stands long distances apart is not a practical option, so inter-stand rolls are introduced which divert the strip from its almost straight path from stand to stand. These rolls can further inhibit the transfer of disturbances from stand to stand, through their inherent inertia, and additionally if they have rotational drives attached. It is now practical to configure mill stands such that strip travels vertically between the working rolls improving stability by balancing gravitational influence on lubrication and cooling each side of the strip.
