A covering system and a method for covering a roof with a plant mat comprising a series of modular trays (20) placed in an adjacent manner. This system comprises base elements (6) of adjustable height placed on top of a sealing layer, a grating (18) formed of elements placed in an adjacent manner on these base elements (6) and supporting the modular trays (20). The modular trays (20) comprise a polygonal bottom pierced with calibrated holes (28), upwardly extending sides (34) and reversible interlocking means (36, 38).
