ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A clamp for releasably clamping a rope. The clamp comprises a support base and a plurality of independent clamping members, each having an opening therein through which the rope may pass. The openings are substantially cylindrical in shape and disposed at an angle to a common plane of the support base. One end of each clamping member is pivotally secured to the base. The pivot axes of the clamping members are located at right angles to the rope and lie in a common plane spaced a predetermined distance from the openings through which the rope passes. The said distance is less than the thickness of the rope. The clamping members are displaceable on their pivot axis to assume an open position in which the rope passes freely through the openings, and a closed position where the rope is clamped by the members. When the clamping members are in their open position they form an acute angle with the plane of the support base. The passages are disposed coaxial with one another. When the clamping members are in their open position they are in contact with each other so that the members are displaced from the open position to the clamping position while simultaneously enlarging the acute angle.
