A rope clamping device for releasably clamping a rope in a substantially loop-shaped configuration adjacent to an end section thereof. The rope clamping device has a base member and a closure member hingely connected together. The base member and the closure member both have an elongated configuration and share a common longitudinal extent. The base member has a channel extending longitudinally therethrough. An abutment shoulder extends radially inside the channel. The base member also has a groove on its top surface. The closure member has a set of rope gripping elements projecting from its lower surface. The rope is adapted to be first tied into a knot adjacent to the end section and threaded though the channel with the knot abutting against the abutment shoulder. The rope is then adapted to be formed into a loop adjacent to the knot and a rope segment is adapted to be rested inside the groove. In order to releasably lock the rope in the loop configuration, the closure member is then pivoted until the base member abuts against the closure member with the rope gripping means, preventing longitudinal displacement of the rope segment inside the groove.
