ABSTRACT A rotary hermetic compressor including a compressor cylinder (36) having a bore (44) therein, and a sliding vane (50) slidably disposed in a slot (51) in the compressor wall. The vane (50) extends into the bore (44) of the cylinder (36) for cooperating with a roller (46) to divide the compression chamber (45) into a suction chamber and a discharge chamber. A pressure groove (64) is formed in the wall of the slot (51) on the suction side of the vane (50). The pressure groove (64) is supplied with oil by means of a passage (74) directly connecting the groove (64) with the oil sump (12) whereby a bias force is applied to the vane (50) to partially offset the unbalanced lateral force on the vane portion extending into the cylinder bore (44).
