ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A rotary railway coupler is provided having compound fillets of variable increasing radii inserted between the shank and the butt end of the coupler. The compound fillets 3.reduce the stress concentration between the shank and the butt end of the coupler by distributing the stress over a greater curved surface area in order to decrease the possibility of fatigue cracking and failure at the transition surface between the coupler shank and butt end. The compound fillet may also be arranged to undercut the surfaces of the coupler shank and butt end in order to reduce metal build-up at this location.
