ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A rotary fluid handling device comprising a stationary body, a rotor rotatably mounted in the stationary body, the rotor having at least one flowway therethrough, the flowway having an end portion extending substantially radially into the rotor, annular seal means coaxially surrounding the rotor, disposed within the stationary body, and axially spaced from the radially extending end of the flowwary, and means defining a bypass passageway system having an inlet communicating with the area between the rotor and the stationary body on the axially opposite side of the seal means from the radially extending end of the flowway, the inlet opening at least partially radially outwardly into the stationary body, a portion of the passageway system, including the inlet, com- prising a stator passage extending through the stationary body and sized to prevent a fluid flow rate through the stator passage greater than the fluid flow rate through the seal means.
