A rotary disc cutter for cutting workpieces, especially gears and the like. The rotary cutter comprises a plurality of cutting blades arranged about the periphery of a rotary disc cutter body (1) with at least a portion of the blades being roughing blades (2) comprising a tip (26) and two sides (27) with each side (27) having first (28) and second (29) side portions. The first side portion (28) along with the tip (26) defining a cutting surface of the blades while the second side portion (29) is relieved such that a clear- ance (30) is formed between the second side portion (29) and the surface of the workpiece (19). The clearance (30) being of a di- mension to allow the flow of coolant therethrough thereby improving the cooling of the cutting surface and enhancing the flow of chips away from the vicinity of the blades. The invention further includes a substantially reduced number of blade segments (80, 81, 82, 83). Alternative blade tip configuration (73, 74, 75) are also disclosed.
