A drive mechanism for a driven member having a hub (15) and rim (2) coaxial with and supported by the hub (15) comprises at least two transmission cables (12) which extend between the hub (15) and the rim (2). One end of each transmission cable (12) is secured to the hub (15) and extends from the hub (15) over a guiding sheave journalled within a pulley block (13) fastened to the rim (2) and then extends from the pulley block (13) to the next contiguous, pulley block (13) in a direction opposite to that in which the driven member is to be rotated. The distal end of the transmission cable is attached to this next contiguous pulley block (13). Tensioners (17) are provided for pre-tensioning each cable (12). The driven member can be the rear wheel of a bicycle whereby the extension of the cables (12) can provide a lag between the turning of the hub (15) and the rim (2) thereby effectively providing a variable ratio gearing.

Mécanisme d'entraînement conçu pour un élément entraîné doté d'un moyeu (15) supportant une couronne (2) montée coaxialement par rapport à celui-ci. Ledit mécanisme comporte au moins deux câbles de transmission (12) qui s'étendent entre ledit moyeu (15) et la couronne (2). Une extrémité de chaque câble de transmission (12) est fixée au moyeu (15) depuis lequel elle s'étend sur une poulie de guidage tourillonnée dans un palan (13) fixé à la couronne (2). Elle s'étend ensuite depuis le palan (13) jusqu'au palan suivant (13) dans le sens opposé à celui dans lequel l'élément d'entraînement doit tourner. L'extrémité distale de chaque câble de transmission est fixée au palan (13) le plus proche. Des moyens de tension permettent de pré-tendre chaque câble de transmission. L'élément d'entraînement peut être la roue arrière d'une bicyclette, les câbles d'extension (12) pouvant créer un décalage entre la rotation du moyeu (15) et de la couronne (2), ce qui permet de produire un engrenage à rapports variables.
