Rotary fluid machinery, wherein pistons (41) are slidably fitted into a plurality of cylinders (39) disposed radially in a rotor (31), a plurality of vanes (42) operated in association with the pistons (41) are disposed radially, and a vane chamber (54) is formed between the pair of vanes (42) adjacent to each other, and the radial movements of the pistons (41) and vanes (42) are stopped in the period from the end of an exhaust stroke for exhausting gas phase working media from the cylinders (39) and vane chambers (54) to the start of an intake stroke for starting the supply of the gas phase working media so that the volumes of the cylinders (39) and vane chambers (54) do not vary, whereby a water hammering by liquid phase working media enclosed in the cylinders (39) and vane chambers (54) can be prevented from occurring.
