A manually rotatable member with its axis of rotation substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of a tubular body making up the hair winding portion of the curling iron is pro- vided in combination with a friction wheel having its axis of rotation substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis Or the tubular body. An indexing means is disposed parallel or co- extensive with the longitudinal axis of the tubular body for indexing the friction wheel in response to rotary motion of the rotatable member. -1-
