Abstract A rotary internal combustion engine is herein disclosed consisting of an annular rotating block with a cylindrical exterior wall and an interior wall formed with a plurality of radially arranged, inward opening, eliptical chambers housing a plurality of revolving eliptical pistons, each with a geared track which meshes with a geared track on a roller mounted on a central rotating driving shaft journaled through disc-shaped walls attached to the sides of the block. The pistons are held in sealed contact with the interior wall of the block by the geared roller, and in sealed contact with the disc-shaped walls by spring-loaded rings on each side of the pistons. The block, together with the attached disc-shaped walls and the central driving shaft are held by an annular stationary casing with spark-plug mounts, intake and exhaust ports, and roller bearings on the inside cylindrical wall. Ports at the apex of each eliptical chamber in the rotating block register successively with the spark plugs and the intake and exhaust ports. A spur gear mounted on the driving shaft, between two walls respectively attached to the block and the casing, meshes with gears mounted on that wall attached to the casing, and these mesh with a ring gear attached to the block wall, such the the block rotates a radial distance of one chamber while the pistons revolve 180°. If the block and pistons rotate in a counter-clockwise direction, the driving shaft together with the geared roller rotate in a clockwise direction. In certain embodiments of this invention, the chambers and the pistons may be on any number of shapes other than eliptical, provided that the centrally mounted roller is corres- pondingly shaped such that the piston, or a lobe of the piston, may penetrate successive chambers and revolve in sealed contact with the walls of the block. The invention may also be modified for use as a compressor or pump.
