ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The pump is improved to facilitate maintenance of the pump, especially when the pump is installed in difficult to access locations. A split housing for the shaft/pump compartment seals is provided to give easy access to the seals while allowing the shaft bearings to be located near to the pump rotors. A front cover plate is sealed to a front end of the pump compartment and is connected to the pump housing by a hinge bolted to the front cover plate outside the seal of the front cover plate in such a way that the front cover plate can be reversed to avoid the need to replace the front cover plate when only one side is worn down. A pair of timing gears interconnect the two shafts of the rotors and are provided in a rear compartment which is closed by a rear cover plate. A timing cover plate closes an opening surrounding one of the shafts passing through the rear cover plate, and when the pump is jammed, the timing cover plate can be removed to gain access to a taper locking assembly of the timing gears to realign the two shafts with respect to one another.
