ABSTRACT The present invention provides a rotary piston machine which includes a casing having interchangeable fluid inlet and outlet ports, an internally toothed stator member and an ec- centrically disposed externally toothed rotor member which is in meshing engagement with the stator member. The rotor member has rotational movement about its own axis and orbital movement about the axis of the stator member, with the teeth of the members inter- meshing in sealing engagement to form a group of expanding cells on one side of a rotating line of eccentricity and a group of con- tracting cells on the other side of that line during relative move- ment between the members. A drive shaft in the casing is connected to the rotor member and a valve plate is attached to one side of the rotor member so as to have a sliding and abutting engagement with the stator member in a transversely extending plane. The plate includes first and second sets of circumferentially and al- ternately arranged porting means for sequential fluid engagement with the cells. The first set of porting means is in constant fluid communication with a first one of the ports and a first group of the cells. The second set of porting means is in constant fluid communication with the second one of the ports and a second group of the cells. A generally annular shaped recess is formed between the periphery of the valve plate and the interior of the casing and has fluid communication with the first one of the ports and the first set of porting means. The first set of porting means has flow controlling valving edges in the aforementioned plane, which cyclically intersect the cells and are formed by the periphery of the valve plate.
