2067345 9105144 PCTABS00004 A rotary piston machine (160) has a casing (12'), a trochoidal piston (36') defined with an outer envelope and rotatable within the casing between opposed side walls (172, 174). A radial seal (48') for the piston (36') is mounted in a recess (176) in the casing module (20'). In a first embodiment the radial seal comprises a plurality of seal members (182, 184, 186) which together define a seal surface (180) for engagement with the piston periphery (37') and which are biased towards the piston (36'), an intermediate seal member (186) being resiliently biased and wedge shaped whereby the intermediate seal member (186) urges opposed end seal members (182, 184) into sealing contact with the respective ends of the recess defined by the opposed side walls (172, 174). In a second embodiment a peripheral axial seal (210) extends around a side wall of the piston (36') and a side sealing device (178) projects from the corresponding side wall (172, 174) of the casing (12') adjacent the radial seal (48') and is resiliently biased into sealing contact with the piston side wall to substantially seal any gap between the radial seal (48') and the peripheral axial seal (210).
