2063387 9117401 PCTABS00008 A rotary reactor (20) having a cylindrical, horizontally-oriented chamber (22) lined with a refractory (38) for burning materials therein and a plurality of trough-like lifters (40), extending along the interior surface of the chamber, for lifting sand in the chamber as the chamber rotates includes a lifter assembly (52, 54) which provides a secure, long-wearing mounting mechanism for the lifters which minimizes the degradation of the attachment of the lifter by the intrusion of contaminants between the lifter and the refractory. The lifter assembly comprises a bolt (56) for attaching the lifter to the chamber, a split support cylinder (76) recessed into the refractory lining and coaxial with the bolt, a sleeve (58) extending through the chamber and refractory receiving the bolt and being coaxial with the support cylinder, an anchor plate (82) receiving the bolt and sleeve member therethrough and having an outer periphery substantially contiguous with an inner periphery of the sleeve member, a mounting plate (72) supported on the support cylinder and attached to the anchor plate, a retainer plate (90) attached to an inner surface of the lifter and receiving the bolt therethrough so that the bolt cams against the retainer plate, and a cap (96) covering and protecting an end of the bolt. In one embodiment, the assembly includes slots (98, 100) formed in lifter and retainer plate to allow movement of the lifter relative to the bolt resulting from thermal expansion. A cam plate (102) is slidably mounted within the slots and receives the bolt means, and a slide plate (106) covers the slots and cam plate to prevent fouling of the slots.
