66235-85 ABSTRACT Cooling of lubricant supplied to the bearing surfaces of a sealed lubricated rotary cutter drill bit is achieved by passing cooling compressed air, which is normally supplied for removal of cuttings, through the lubricant reservoir. The compressed air is also passed to a ball plug in the cone of the bit. The ball plug is provided with through holes for the compressed air to improve cooling of the ball plug. The ball plug also has a passage through which the lubricant passes to a bearing surface. The lubricant is cooled by heat transfer by the ball plug.
