Abstract A rotary sliding gate valve for controlling the flow of molten metal includes a stationary portion with a refractory valve body and a rotary portion with a refractory valve body. The two valve bodies are in sliding engagement at a sliding surface. The stationary and rotary valve portions define a gap extending around the edge of the sliding surface and an annular seal is provided in the gap whereby an annular chamber is defined which is sealed with respect to the atmosphere so that oxygen cannot gain access to the sliding surface.
