A rotary valve for a hydraulic power steering gear, has a sleeve (11) with slots (19a-b) journalled to an input-shaft (10) with grooves ( 18a-c), the co-acting sleeve slots and input-shaft grooves defining axially extending orifices. The orifices are ported as a network such that they form primary and secondary hydraulic Wheatstone bridges arranged in parallel, each bridge comprising two limbs each of which incorporate inlet and return orifices communicating to respective inlet and return ports of the valve. The limbs of the primary bridge incorporate means providing hydraulic communication to one of the cylinder port, whereas the limbs of the secondary bridge do not incorporate such means. The return orifice (34a, 34b) in each secondary bridge limb is formed by a metering edge contour on the edge of a secondary return groove (18c) and circumferentially overlapping an adjacent sleeve bore land when the valve is in its neutral position to such an extent such that the return orifice provides a restriction to hydraulic flow for all valve operating angles thereby applying a back pressure to the upstream inlet orifice. The back pressure being sufficient to significantly suppress the generation of cavitation noise in the inlet orifice.

Les encoches du manchon et les gorges de l'arbre d'entrée forment ensemble des orifices qui s'étendent axialement. Ces orifices sont reliés pour former un réseau, de telle sorte qu'ils forment des ponts de Wheatstone hydrauliques, primaire et secondaire, montés en parallèle, chaque pont comprenant deux branches dont chacune comporte des orifices d'entrée et de retour qui communiquent avec les ouvertures d'entrée et de retour respectives de la soupape. Les branches du pont primaire comprennent des moyens assurant une communication hydraulique avec l'un des orifices du cylindre, tandis que les branches du pont secondaire ne comprennent pas de moyens de ce genre. L'orifice de retour (34a, 34b), dans chaque branche de pont secondaire, est formé par un contour d'arête de dosage sur le bord d'une gorge de retour secondaire (18c) et il chevauche, sur la circonférence, un méplat d'alésage de manchon voisin, quand la soupape est en position neutre, dans une mesure telle que l'orifice de retour restreint l'écoulement hydraulique pour tous les angles de fonctionnement de la soupape, appliquant ainsi une contre-pression à l'orifice d'entrée amont. La contre-pression est suffisante pour réduire dans une mesure importante la génération de bruits de cavitation dans l'orifice d'entrée.
