A rotary vibration damper for a shaft has a flywheel ring, a hub, circumferentially evenly distributed first resilient elements for interconnection of the flywheel ring with the hub and second resilient elements of substantially columnar shape which are located between the first resilient elements. The second resilient elements each have one end affixed to the hub and with the other end to the flywheel ring and are inwardly curved between their ends when the rotary vibration damper is at standstill. The curvature is progressively straightened out with increasing speed of rotation of the rotary vibration damper by the centrifugal force acting on the second resilient elements. This straightening provides for a pretensioning of the second resilient elements and, thus, for an increased spring rigidity of the rotary vibration damper. The rotary vibration damper has an improved long term durability and a good out-of-balance behaviour.
