ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and apparatus for culturing cells or plant tissues, comprising steps of (1) packing a culturing vessel with a mixture system consisting of a liquid medium and anchorage-independent cells, plant tissues, or carrier particles having adhered thereto anchorage-dependent cells, so that the culturing vessel is substantially filled with the mixture system, and (2) rotating the culturing vessel on its own substantially horizontal axis, to rotate the mixture system in the steady state synchronously with the culturing vessel, thereby moving the anchorage- independent cells, the plant tissues or the carrier particles having adhered thereto anchorage-dependent cells in the mixture system, to disperse them in the liquid medium. Use of said process and apparatus enables the cells or plant tissues to be uniformely dispered in a liquid medium of the mixture system consisting of the liquid medium and the cells or plant tissues, substantially without applying a shear force to the mixture system, whereby the cells or plant tissues can be cultured at a high efficiency.
