A horizontally rotating apparatus for longitudinal positioning of lumber pieces in length trimming. The system functions alongside a parallel chain transfer conveyor which moves the lumber laterally towards a multiple saw trimmer, all pieces being evenly spaced and aligned endwise to one side of the chain transfer, as is customary in trimmer feed systems. The apparatus comprises one or a number of evenly spaced clamping devices rotating about a vertical axis and describing a circular path which slightly overlaps the even end line of the incoming lumber. Upon closing on the end portion of a board in the overlapping zone, the clamp pulls it along the established arc of rotation, firstly in a direction mostly parallel to the original lumber travel and, secondly, in a progressively perpendicular direction, as the rotation of the clamp continues. The clamp opening and subsequent release of the piece are controlled by computer command according to scanning data obtained for each piece, thus performing a basic positioning operation to be refined, for certain operating conditions, by adding an independently controlled locating bar accessory.
