TITLE IP-0651-A ROTOR RECOGNITION SYSTEM ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A transmitter and associated receiver interrogate the surface of a rotor at one or more radial positions from the center of rotation using emitted pulses of energy. Signature signals representative of the distance traveled by the pulses collectively form a signature signal pattern which is compared to a reference library of such signature signal patterns. Each pattern in the library represents one of a predetermined plurality of rotors. The comparison of the detected pattern with the patterns in the library generates an indicator signal containing information representative of the identity of the interrogated rotor.
