Just before the lifting of the tool joint, during drilling operations, the roughneck jacket is wrapped tightly around the tool joint, creating a seal and thereby controlling the flow of pressurized mud moving it downward and back into the mud system. The roughneck jacket consists mainly of a tapered leather and neoprene sheet (72cm x 100cm) which covers 75mm to 175mm pipe with heavy nylon strapping sewn along the top and velcro along the sides with a belt to cinch the top and lined with soft ribbed rubber.

Le dispositif anti-éclaboussure pour tubage se compose principalement d'une pièce de cuir et de néoprène en forme de cône (72 cm x 100 cm) recouvrant un tubage de 75 mm à 175 mm d'une bande de nylon renforcé cousue le long de son haut et de bandes velcro sur les côtés, ainsi que d'une courroie utilisée pour enserrer le haut du dispositif, qui est garni de caoutchouc nervuré.
