RS-thioctic acid with a novel morphology which is obtained by a recrystallization process is described. The process comprises dissolving one part thioctic acid at 10 to 60°C in 5 to 20 parts solvent or solvent mixture and then cooling the solution within 2 to 10 hours to zero to -20°C the solvent has a dielectric constant, epsilon, between 2.5 and 5.5 and is, e.g., a mixture of pentane, cyclohexane and acetic acid, ethyl, ester or ethers. The novel morphology allows the product to have favourable galenic processing properties when preparing pharmaceuticals.
